2 x 5 MW Baner khad & Iku khad small hydroelectric project for a grid system
110
The bundled project activity comprises of two run-of-the river hydroelectric schemes with capacities of 5 MW each. It utilizes surplus hydro potential available in Baner Khad & Iku Khad, both tributaries of the river Beas in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Northern India. It exports the generated electricity to the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB), a state-owned power utility. The details for each of these projects are described below.
5 MW Baner-III small hydroelectric project: the project is located on the upstream of the existing Baner HEP of HPSEB on Baner Khad, a tributary of Beas River. The catchment area is snow bound. The terrain is Himalayan Mountain range and no irrigation is possible in the area.
5 MW Iku-II small hydroelectric project: the Iku-II plant is located across Iku Khad, a tributary of Baner Khad. Baner-III plant is located on upstream of existing Baner HEP of HPSEB on Baner Khad, a tributary of Beas River.
The project components convert the potential energy available in the water flows into mechanical energy using hydro turbines and then to electrical energy using alternators. The generated power is transformed (stepped-up) to match the nearest sub-station voltage level for interconnection and smooth evacuation of power.
The project therefore displaces fossil fuel-based electricity generation and is estimated to achieve 35,912 tCO2e emission reductions annually.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development
The additional contributions of project activity towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social, economic, environmental and technological well-being aspects as follows:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The project provides employment, which would not have occurred in the absence of the project in the area.
The project reduces the energy deficit in the region and uplifts the vulnerable sections of society who are burdened by inadequate power supply and quality.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing:
The project allows for a huge mobilisation of financial resources to an underprivileged region. Thereby contributing to the development of infrastructure in the area.
The project creates additional development in the region, there by alleviating the poverty in the area. The project contributes to gender equality by providing equal opportunities for both genders.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project has no negative impact on the surrounding environment and contributes to environmental well-being.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing:
The project demonstrates the harness of hydro potential in difficult terrains and in small streams in the Himalayan region. The project also demonstrates the opportunities available for cleaner energy technologies.
