The Nueva Aldea Biomass Power Plant Phase 2 project activity consists in the construction of a new pulp mill with a 42 MW surplus electric power generation capacity to the grid in Chile’s VIII Region. The project uses biomass residues (black liquor from the pulping process) as a renewable fuel source to cogenerate heat and power. The project activity was implemented by Celulosa Arauco y Constitución S.A., a leading forestry company headquartered in Chile, South America.
The Nueva Aldea Phase 2 project activity assists Chile’s sustainable development by fostering the implementation of distributed power generation in a country that has traditionally relied on big-scale and centralized power plant developments. The use of highly-efficient cogeneration equipment allows for a better use of local and renewable resources, while at the same time, reducing the use of fossil fuels in grid connected power plants. This contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions, as well as other air contaminants, in a country that has historically suffered from high levels of particulate material air pollution.
The Nueva Aldea Phase 2 CDM project activity is a good example of how forestry companies can successfully implement renewable, clean and more efficient technologies; incorporating effective and scalable policies to combat Climate Change in their long-term development strategy.
