The CDM project activity involves the installation of three Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) with a total capacity of 1.8 MW for renewable electricity generation using wind energy. The project is located at Mallegoundenpalayam village, Palladam Taluk, Tirupur district, Tamil Nadu, and is connected to the Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board (TNEB) grid. Being a greenfield project, no power generation facility previously existed at the site. In the absence of this project, equivalent electricity would have been supplied to the Southern Grid predominantly through fossil fuel-based sources.
The project supplies net electricity of 3,251 MWh annually to the Southern Regional Electricity Grid, resulting in estimated emission reductions of 2,979 tCO₂e per year. The electricity generated is supplied directly to the grid without any wheeling arrangement.
Contribution to Sustainable Development
The project contributes to sustainable development across four key dimensions:
1. Social Wellbeing
The project creates employment opportunities for the local population during erection, operation, and maintenance of the wind farms, thereby improving livelihoods and contributing to poverty alleviation.
The project develops local infrastructure and amenities which in turn further enhances the community’s living standards.
2. Economic Wellbeing
The project stimulates local economic activity through procurement of largely unproductive land, leading to an increase in land value and additional income opportunities for farmers who continue cultivation alongside WTGs.
The project generates both direct and indirect jobs for local workers, while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, thereby contributing to national economic stability.
3. Environmental Wellbeing
By generating clean energy, the project mitigates greenhouse gas emissions, conserves finite fossil fuel resources, and supports the supply of eco-friendly, renewable electricity to the grid.
4. Technological Wellbeing
The project employs reliable and proven Wind Turbine Generator technology from M/s RRB Energy Limited, encouraging adoption of renewable energy technologies and promoting technical expertise in wind power deployment in India.
