24.75MW Basavanna hydro project in Karnataka, India
The purpose of the project is to generate 24.75 MW of electricity using hydropower potential available in river Krishna near Benchagaddi village of Shorapur taluk, Gulburga district in Karnataka. This run-of-river power project has generate power and export the same to BESCOM, of Southern Grid, India.
This project is reducing the GHG emissions by using cleaner and renewable (hydro power) source for power generation instead of common fossil fuel. The project is thus reducing the dependence of the Southern grid on fossil fuels mostly dominated by emissions from intensive coal based thermal power plants. The capacity of the power house is 24.75 MW (3 X 8.25MW). The lifetime of the project activity is 30 years.

Contribution of the project to Social Wellbeing: ● The project is contributing towards the infra structure development in its neighboring region like better roadways, telecommunication etc. The project activity is increasing the income security of vulnerable sections of the rural communities in the vicinity of the project site by providing them employment opportunity associated with the project.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing: ● The project generates power using the renewable source and supplies the electricity to Southern Grid (SE) which would have been generated by fossil fuel based power plants in the absence of the project. The project activity avoids greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. By utilizing renewable energy sources, the project helps in prevention of fossil fuels like coal, gas, natural gas. The impact of the project activity is minimal as the project is a run-of-river based power plant.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing: ● The construction of the hydro power plant is helping generate employment opportunity for large groups of people around the project activity. This increases the skill set of the people and eventually raises the economic standards of the people.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing: ● The technology used in the project is clean technology and successful implementation encourages private entities and finance corporations to enter renewable power generation.
