3 MW Grid connected Wind Electricity Generation at Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu, India
1
The purpose of the project is to establish a 2 x 1.5 MW wind power project in Kasthurirangapuram village of Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu and export the generated electricity to the Southern grid. The net electricity for export to the grid from the two wind power projects is 4,5482.37 MWh for the monitoring period.
The project utilizes the velocity of the wind for power generation by installation of Wind Electric Generators (WEG). The technology employed is conversion of kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy by using wind turbine and subsequently into electrical energy. As the project utilizes naturally available wind velocity for power generation and does not consume any fossil fuels, it contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to the extent of 4,2159 tCO2eq to the grid, which would have, otherwise, been generated by the operation of grid-connected power plants and by addition of new generation sources.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development
The contributions of the project towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social well-being, economic prosperity, environmental well-being and technological aspects as follows:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The project enhances availability of power to the local industries, agriculture and commercial activities in the vicinity of the project area by augmenting power supply to the Southern grid, thereby improving quality of power supplied to various users by stabilizing the grid.
The project provided employment to the local population during erection and operation of the Wind Electric Generators (WEGs).
Contribution to Economical Wellbeing (Economic Prosperity):
The project, indirectly preserves natural resources such as land, forests, minerals, water, and eco-systems and contributes to the development of the local economy through the creation of employment, particularly in rural areas.
The project is contributing towards addressing the power deficiency scenario in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The project opens up new business opportunities for local villagers, local labor contractors, local equipment suppliers and biomass suppliers which helps in increasing the income of these people who are directly or indirectly connected with the project. From a macro perspective, the project bolsters the energy security of the country by reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Thus, the project is contributing towards improving the economic well-being of the country.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project utilizes wind velocity for generating power. The power generated is getting supplied to the Southern grid, which is dominated by power generated using fossil fuels. The project activity results in reduction of GHG emissions and contribute to preserving and improving the environment.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing:
The project is using the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) having three rotor blades. The HAWT uses natural wind velocity, which rotates the rotor, converting the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy and further converting the mechanical energy into electrical energy with the use of an electric generator. Hence, this project is safe for the environment and promotes installation of similar machines.
