The objective of this project is to generate clean, renewable electricity using wind energy and supply it to the grid to help meet India’s growing energy demand. The project is located in the villages of Mokla, Sonu, and Serava in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, where four Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) have been installed. Each WTG has a capacity of 2.1 MW, contributing to a total installed capacity of 8.4 MW.
The electricity generated is supplied to Jodhpur Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (JVVNL), which is connected to the NEWNE Grid (North-East-West-North-East) of India. In the absence of this project, the equivalent power would have been generated from grid-connected thermal power plants, primarily based on fossil fuels. Therefore, the project supports climate action by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contributing to a cleaner energy mix.
Contribution to Sustainable Development
The project contributes to sustainable development across four key dimensions:
1. Social Wellbeing
The project has created both direct and indirect employment opportunities for local residents during the construction, erection, and transportation phases.
It supports community development by strengthening local infrastructure and skills in the renewable energy sector.
2. Economic Wellbeing
By demonstrating the commercial viability of wind energy, the project promotes further private investment in Rajasthan’s renewable energy sector.
It stimulates local economies through enhanced employment, service contracts, and ancillary business opportunities, contributing to long-term regional development.
3. Environmental Wellbeing
The project displaces electricity that would otherwise be generated from fossil fuels, thereby reducing GHG emissions and conserving non-renewable resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
Wind energy generation produces no air, water, or solid waste pollution, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
The project contributes to both global climate goals and local environmental protection efforts by promoting clean energy.
4. Technological Wellbeing
The project utilizes modern, grid-interactive wind turbine technology that is both efficient and environmentally sound.
It enhances energy diversification in Rajasthan by integrating renewable sources into the state’s energy mix.
The successful implementation of the project showcases the region’s wind energy potential and serves as a model to encourage further adoption of similar technologies.
