The project establishment is an hydro power plant located on the Binwa-IV khad, a tributary of Beas River in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh, India. The project is a run-of-river hydro project without storage of water and having an installed capacity of total 4 MW further comprising of Unit # 1- 2 MW, Unit # 2- 2MW, which are generating electricity using renewable hydro resource meeting the ever increasing demand for power. The project activity reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by the regional grid generation mix which is mainly dominated by fossil fuel based power plants.
Emissions reductions from hydroelectric power projects come from offsetting grid electricity by replacing it with a zero-emissions source of power. The project produces renewable energy by utilizing hydro power as an energy source and converting the potential energy available in the water flow into mechanical energy using turbine and then to electrical energy using generators. The generated electricity is fed into the 33kV Baijnath sub-station of Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) and some electricity is then exported to the regional NEWNE grid of India.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development:
The additional contributions of project activity towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social, economic, environmental and technological well-being aspects as follows:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The project activity generates employment opportunities for the local community at all levels from unskilled labour to skilled manpower.
The project is run-of-river and hence there is no displacement of population and no rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) issues occur.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing:
The generated electricity is sold to the NEWNE regional grid, thereby improving the grid frequency and availability of electricity to the consumers which opens up new opportunities for industries and economic activities to be setup in the area. This results in local employment, ultimately contributing to the overall development of the area.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project activity reduces carbon dioxide emissions through the avoided usage of fossil fuel-based electricity generation.
In this process there is no greenhouse gas emissions or burning of any fossil fuels. Thus, electricity is generated through sustainable means without causing any negative impact on the environment. Therefore, the technology is environmentally safe and sound.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing:
The project generates electricity from water through a Horizontal Francis turbine which is an established technology with no negative effects on the environment making this technology is considered environmentally safe and sound.
The equipment is brought within India supporting economy and also there is no transfer of technology from Annex I countries.
