Caixa Econômica Federal Solid Waste Management and Carbon Finance Project
0
The Caixa Econômica Federal Solid Waste Management and Carbon Finance Project aims to reduce methane emissions from municipal landfills in Brazil. Led by Caixa Econômica Federal, a Brazilian public bank with a mission to “be the public financial institution that fosters inclusion and sustainable development, transforming people’s lives,” this project embodies the bank’s commitment to sustainability.
The CTR Santa Rosa project activity, part of PoA CAIXA, is located in the Seropédica municipality of Rio de Janeiro state, close to Rio de Janeiro city, Brazil's second most populous city. Daily, CTR Santa Rosa drains and captures 450,000 cubic meters of greenhouse gases. This landfill gas, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, is captured by the project, converted into electricity, and distributed as biogas.
The project has also enabled the closure of the Gramacho and Gericinó controlled landfills and led to the termination and environmental recovery of the Seropédica and Itaguaí dumps. Developed under CAIXA’s Socioenvironmental Guidelines, the project includes initiatives like the Social and Environmental Management Plan (PGSA), the Environmental Education Plan (PEA), and the Waste Collectors Social Inclusion Plan (PISCA).
