Central de Resíduos do Recreio Landfill Gas Project (CRRLGP)
18
This CDM project activity encompasses implementation and operation of a pioneer initiative promoting collection and destruction/utilization of landfill gas (LFG) at the landfill site named Central de Resíduos do Recreio that is located in the city of Minas do Leão – Rio Grande do Sul State, in the Southern region of Brazil.
The project has promoted permanent mitigation of methane (CH4) emissions into the atmosphere that would occur in the absence of the project.
The project started in 2006 as an LFG flaring project, and in 2015 was upgraded to a an electricity generation project, being the first registered CDM project to have an electricity generation power plant being included in the project activity.
Currently, a significant share of the LFG is utilized as a renewable fuel for electricity generation in an installed state-of-the-art electricity generation plant with a capacity of 8.556 MW, providing electricity for more than 200 000 persons. The remaining LFG is combusted under a high temperature flare.
The project promotes significant positive impacts towards sustainable development in Brazil.
First, by collecting and destroying/utilizing LFG, it also minimizes the risk of explosions in the landfill site.
Secondly, initiatives of this type remain being not common in Brazil, the implementation and operation of the project activity has represented technology transfer.
Thirdly, while specialized labor and skills are required for implementing and operating the project activity, that represents positive impact in terms of employment and capacity-building in the region.
