Generation of Electricity from 2.50 MW wind turbine in Tirunelveli District, Tamilnadu, India by M/s. Woodbriar Estate Ltd
51
This is a wind power project activity which consists in the operation of two Wind Turbines Generators (WTG’s) each having a capacity of 1.25 MW. The WTG’s are installed by M/s Woodbriar Estate Limited in the Tirunelveli district (Tamil Nadu state).
The project leads to displacement of electricity generation from fossil fuel-based power plants connected to the regional grid by renewable energy generated using wind power. It also results in reduction of carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere.
The project’s contribution towards sustainable development has been addressed based on the following sustainable development aspects:
- Social and economic well-being: The project has provided job opportunities to local population during the construction, commissioning and maintenance of the turbines. Establishment of the turbines has direct and indirect positive effects on the economy of the village and nearby area.
- Environmental well-being: Wind power is one of the cleanest renewable energy sources of electricity and does not involve use of fossil fuels nor GHG emissions. The impact on land, water, air and soil is negligible. Thus, this project contributes to environmental well-being without causing any negative impact on the surrounding environment.
- Technological well-being: The project is a step forward in harnessing the untapped wind potential and further diffusion of technology in the region. The project leads to the promotion of WTGs and demonstrates the success of wind turbines in the region which further motivates wind power project investors. The project leads, therefore, to technological well-being.
