Grid Connected Wind Power Generation in Tamil Nadu, India
58
The project activity involves installation of 15 wind turbine generators (WTG) in a phased manner in the different districts of Tamil Nadu state by Premier Cotton Textiles (PCT), a partnership firm, and Sree Narasimha Textiles Pvt Ltd (SNT), both belonging to the Premier Group. The cumulative capacity of the WTGs is 24.75 MW as each WTG is having capacity of 1.65MW.
The objective of the project activity is to generate electricity from renewable wind energy without any associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In the absence of the project activity, the equivalent amount of electricity would be generated from the connected power plants in the southern grid which are based on fossil fuels. The project activity thus reduces the greenhouse gas emissions by generation of electricity from renewable and clean energy source, i.e.,Wind. The electricity thus generated is connected to the Southern grid of India and wheeled by the project proponents for captive use.
Contribution of the project to sustainable development
The contributions of project activity towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social well-being, economic prosperity, environmental well-being and technological aspects as follows:
Contribution of the project to Social Wellbeing:
The project activity is leading to the development of supporting infrastructure such as road network etc., in the wind farm location, the access to which is also provided to the local population.
The project also provides employment opportunities to the skilled/ unskilled manpower.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project activity is generating clean energy without any GHG emissions commonly associated with the electricity generation in fossil fuel based power plants. The Project is further reducing generation of SOx, NOx and particulates commonly associated with electricity generation in general.
The project is using only natural wind as the energy source and hence is a clean energy generation with no negative impact on the health of the community or on the biological life nearby.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing:
The land purchased for the wind farms is mostly non arable and sparsely inhabited areas. In addition, there is rural and infrastructure development such as roads around the wind farms.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing:
The clean renewable electricity generated is being supplied to the state electricity grid to meet their demands and distributed energy generation will reduce losses during transmission.
