Hebei ChengAn Biomass Cogeneration Project is located in ChengAn County, Hebei Province, China. Its purpose is to use local straw from cotton to generate electricity. The electricity generated from the project is sold to the Hebei Provincial Power Grid which is a part of the North China Power Grid in order to replace the capacity of coal-fired power plants. The on-grid coal-fired power plant dominates the North China Power Grid.
We would like to highlight that 80k tons CERs have been used from this project for carbon neutrality at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 and at the 4th Asian Para Games Hangzhou 2022.
Contribution to Sustainable Development
The project is consistent with China’s national energy policy and sustainable development strategy. The contributions of this project towards sustainable development are explained with the following indicators:
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
GHG emission reduction. The project avoids the dumping, leaving to decay or uncontrolled burning of biomass to mitigate the methane emissions. The emission reduction is 145,604Tco2e per year in the first crediting period.
Comprehensive utilization of resources. Hebei Province produces rich agricultural straw resources which would otherwise be dumped or left to decay under mainly aerobic conditions in the absence of the project. The project realizes biomass comprehensive utilization in the region and serves as an example of such projects in China.
Contribution to environment protection. The project reduces not only GHG emissions, but also SO2 emissions to abate air pollution. Furthermore, the project avoids uncontrolled burning of biomass in the region, which avoids air pollution and subsequent smoke impacts to local road transportation. Economic growth, social benefits and environmental improvement is achieved in the region by conducting the project.
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
Providing job opportunities and increasing income of local residents. The project directly benefits the local region by creating new jobs and investment opportunities, simulating economic development. For more information on this project, please click here.
