The Hunan Sanjiangkou 50MW Hydropower Expansion Project is located on the Lishui River, at Shimen County, Changde City of Hunan Province, China. The project is constructed and operated by Hunan Zhaoheng Hydro-electric Power Co., Ltd. The existing station (Sanjiangkou Hydropower Station) has the installed capacity of 62.5 MW. The project is designed to generate power to make full use of abandoned water resources.
The installed capacity of the project is 50MW (2 x 25 MW). The power generated by the project is transferred to the grid’s Shimen Panshan substation through a 220kV transmission line. Electricity generated by the project displaces part of the electricity generated by the Central China Power Grid which is dominated by coal-fired power plants, and thus greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions are achieved.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development
The contributions of this project towards sustainable development are explained with the following indicators:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The project activity generates employment in the region and improves economic activities by strengthening the state’s local electricity grid. This includes improvement of electricity quality, frequency and availability as the electricity is fed into a deficit grid.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing:
The project activity creates direct and indirect job opportunities for the local community.
The project improves the local economy from the selling of electricity and CERs, thus alleviating poverty in Shimen County, where the project is located, and which is one of the poorest areas in Hunan province. This further improves the socio-economic status of the region.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project displaces part of the electricity from coal-fired power plants, thus avoiding environmental pollution caused by coal burning.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing:
The technology used in the project activity is clean technology and makes greater use of renewable hydroelectric resources.
