MSPSPL Waste Heat Recovery Based Captive Power Project
1
MSP Steel & Power Limited (MSPSPL) is a greenfield integrated steel complex involved in the manufacture of sponge iron, billet castings and TMT bars in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. The traditional pollution control method of dealing with the waste gas stream is through installation of a wet scrubbing system which has many environmental and economic impacts associated with it.
The project activity recovers waste heat of the gas stream emanating from the kiln and uses it for generation of electrical energy. The waste heat recovery unit has an electrostatic precipitator to clean the dust laden gas and effectively uses the energy contained within it, which would have otherwise been vented after conditioning.
The project activity is thus generating 16 MW electrical power through waste heat recovery boilers (WHRB) to meet the in-house requirements of MSPSPL which would have otherwise been met by the predominantly coal based grid power. The project activity therefore generates electrical power through waste gas displacing similar quantum of electricity that would have been generated by the predominantly coal based grid, thereby reducing significant amount of GHG emissions.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development
The contributions of project activity towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social, economic, environmental, and technological well-being aspects as follows:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The usage of pollution control equipment like ESP in the project activity ensures that the project gives the desired output with minimal adverse impacts to the local community and environment.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing:
The project’s ability to reduce an equivalent demand of electricity on the grid is an advantage to the state grid in combating against power shortage and making it available for other important processes.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project generates electrical power through waste gas replacing the quantum of electricity generated by the coal-based grid, thereby reducing significant amount of particulate and GHG emissions.
The project is a step towards conservation of natural resources and reduction in dependence of fossil fuels.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing:
The project uses efficient environmentally safe technology for power generation.
The project’s use of waste heat recovery unit is a remarkable sustainable development measure by MSPSPL in the sponge iron industry.
