This Programme of Activities (PoA) generates solar power which is supplied to the grid system of India. The PoA’s objective is to develop a carbon platform for overcoming hurdles encountered during implementation of small-scale solar power projects in India. The project activities under this PoA are the first of their kind because they were commissioned when solar power was nascent in the country and its capital costs highly prohibitive.
This PoA includes ten small-scale solar projects with a total planned capacity of 72.75 MW. CERs from five grid-connected solar power projects of 5MW each in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, India are included in its monitoring period and are being offered for sale. These projects reduce CO2 emissions which otherwise would have been emitted by the existing fossil fuel-based power plants connected to the National Grid in India.
The project activities included in this monitoring period generate a cumulative of 45,000 MWh of net electricity every year, corresponding to an emission reduction of 43,313 tCo2 annually.
Contribution of the PoA to sustainable development
The contributions of this project towards sustainable development are explained with the following indicators:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
These projects have been set up in remote areas of the country. Development of these projects has generated more than 60 permanent and temporary jobs for local inhabitants. By offering job opportunities to both skilled and unskilled manpower, these projects improve the economic conditions of local residents.
Power generated from these projects is fed into a deficit grid, thereby improving the availability of electricity.
These projects have contributed to the development of 20 learning centers in remote areas including Banswara, Rajasthan. These centers focus on empowering girls by providing free elementary education to 400+ girls.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
Solar energy is a renewable source of energy and reduces the dependence on fossil fuels. This in turn conserves natural resources, which are on the verge of depletion and over-exploitation.
By replacing electricity generated from fossil fuels, these projects are resulting in reduction of both GHG emissions and air borne pollutants, such as oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur, carbon monoxide and particulates.
Contribution to Technology Wellbeing:
The successful operation of these projects serves as a demonstration for harnessing solar potential and encourages other small-scale entrepreneurs to participate in similar projects. This has contributed to the sustainable development of the local area and the host country India by enhancing the electricity supply with clean, renewable solar power.
