In the domain of Waste Heat Recovery Systems and Steel Plants, this was the first globally Registered CDM Project, dating back to the year 2002, located in the Chhattisgarh State in India by the Company Godawari Power and Ispat Limited (GPIL), engaged in the business of steel manufacture through captive power generation.

In this project activity, which is a strategic fit in the scheme of initiatives of GPIL, we aim to conserve natural resources while generating electricity to the tune of 7 MW. This is accomplished by using waste heat flue gases emanating from another facility which is an adjunct to a mini-steel plant. These hot gases produce steam by heating up water for power generation. Thus, we save conventional fossil fuel in power generation, which is one of the sustainable development co-benefits the project offers through technological excellence.

The other noteworthy sustainable development benefits through this project are:

      • Eliminating thermal pollution, as had these gases not been tapped for power generation, would have been released in the atmosphere and degrade the neighbourhood’s environment.

      • Eliminating fly ash generation by ensuring solid waste management techniques.

      • Curtailing emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere amounting to an average annual CO₂ emission of around 17,829 tons.

      • Offering increased employment within and outside the Company for skilled manpower and professionals as well as for semi-skilled and unskilled manpower.

      • Ensuring social benefits to the State by not making the demand for electricity through the conventional grid of the Electricity Board of the State. This enables the Board to satisfy more consumers leading to more employment, and

      • Opening up Community Centres and Skill Development Centres in the surrounding villages by utilizing a part of the revenue arising out of this plant and associated steel manufacturing facilities.
