Renewable biomass based thermal energy generation in Mangal Textile Mills (I) Pvt. Ltd.
33
Mangal Textile Mills (1) Pvt. Ltd (MTMPL) is an India's well-known textile manufacturing organization which implements the project. The eco-friendly project is located at the textile manufacturing unit at Vatva, GIDC, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The purpose of the project is to utilize available renewable biomass residues effectively for thermal energy requirements (process steam generation and thermic fluid heating) by replacing/avoiding fossil fuel (lignite) usage. The project involves the use of Fluidized Bed Combustion (FBC) technology-based steam boilers and thermic fluid heaters to generate thermal energy. The steam generated and heated thermic fluid/oil is utilized for in-house consumption alone. The capacities of FBC technology-based steam-boilers included in the project are 12TPH (tonnage per hour) and 6TPH. The existing thermic fluid heaters included in the current monitoring period have a capacity of 2.0 mkcal/ hr and 2.5 mkcal/ hr.
Contribution of the project to sustainable development
The contributions of project towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social well-being, economic prosperity, environmental well-being and technological aspects as follows:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The project is avoiding usage of fossil fuel by replacing it with renewable biomass residue which is sourced from local biomass suppliers. Thus, the project activity results in additional revenues for local farmers, biomass residue suppliers, local equipment suppliers and for local workers involved in biomass handling. The project activity therefore is socially beneficial and promotes sustainable development.
Contribution to Economical Wellbeing (Economic Prosperity):
The project opens up new business opportunities for local villagers, local labor contractors, local equipment suppliers and biomass suppliers which helps in increasing the income of these people who are directly or indirectly connected with the project. From a macro perspective, the project bolsters the energy security of the country by reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Thus, the project is contributing towards improving the economic well-being of the country.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project utilizes renewable biomass residues and avoids fossil fuel usage. The use of renewable biomass causes no net emissions (as compared to other fossil fuels) since the CO2 emissions are sequestered back when the biomass grows. This directly reduces consumption of fossil fuels and thus contributes to GHG emission reduction. Thus, the activity implemented is an environment-friendly initiative by MTMPL.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing (Technological Up-gradation):
The technology used in the project is FBC technology which utilizes biomass residues efficiently. The project promotes the use of renewable fuels for meeting the process heat requirements for the textile company. Thus, the project has the potential to encourage other textile companies to adopt similar technologies for meeting the process heat requirements. Therefore, the project promotes technological well-being.
