The main objective of the project activity is to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by energy generation through renewable source namely Wind.
The project produces electricity using wind energy which is completely renewable and pollution free. The generated power is exported to the grid, hence reducing the emissions that would have occurred in the absence of the project activity, by the fact that this energy would have been produced by carbon intensive power plants.
The project accounts to 4.25 MW consists of two numbers of capacity 1.5 MW WEGs and one 1.25 MW WEG, all installed in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The project activity is capable in generating approximately 10800 MWh of electricity every year and thereby resulting in emission reductions of approximately 99,108 tCO2e over the entire crediting period of ten years (FY 2012-13 to 2021-22).
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development:
The contributions of project activity towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social, economic, environmental and technological well being aspects as follows:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing: ● Capacity building and empowerment of vulnerable sections of the rural community dwelling in the project area ● The improved local employment scenario also reduces migration of labour to cities to an extent.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing: ● The Wind energy is creating economic development in the form of new jobs, infrastructure development, new revenue through electricity sales, and associated growth and spending thus aiding the economic development of the local region. ● During its operation phases, the project activity is generating small business opportunities for local stakeholders such as bankers, suppliers, manufacturers, contractors and land owners.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing: ● The project activity does not emit air pollutants such as particulates, NOx and SO2 which are normally byproducts of burning of fossil fuels. ● There are also no long-term environmental effects, such as hazardous waste disposal or water pollution associated with wind energy generation.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing: ● The project activity is helping in increasing the share of renewable energy power generation in the regional and national grid. The project activity also, encourages clean, renewable and efficient technologies.
