Renkeng Hydropower Project, Longchuan County, Guangdong Province
54
The Renkeng Hydropower Project, Longchuan County, Guangdong Province is located on the mainstream of Dongjiang River in Huangshi Township of Longchuan County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province, P. R. China. The project is constructed and operated by Longchuan County Yuming Industrial Development Co.,Ltd. and mainly consists of a detention weir to create a run-of-river reservoir with power density at 37.88 W/m2, a 25 MW powerhouse and one set of 110 kV transmission lines.
The installed capacity of the project is 25MW (3 x 8.334 MW). The project provides on-grid power supply of 67,826MWh to Guangdong Provincial grid, then connected to South China Power Grid (SCPG), which is dominated by coal-fired power plants, and thus greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions are achieved.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development
The contributions of the project towards sustainable development are explained with the following indicators:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The project generates 35 full time employment opportunities in Longchuan County.
The project improves economic activities by strengthening the local electricity grid. This includes improvement of electricity quality, frequency and availability as the electricity is fed into the local grid.
The reservoir has a strong capacity of water storage and controls the water flow in the Dongjiang River during the rainy season and dry season, thereby reducing damage to local communities.
Contribution to Economic Wellbeing:
The project creates direct and indirect job opportunities for the local community.
The project improves the local economy from the selling of electricity and CERs, thus increasing the taxation for the local government.
The electricity supplied by the project eases the pressure of power shortage in Guangdong Province.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project displaces part of the electricity from coal-fired power plants, thus reducing air pollution caused by coal burning.
