Samdal Wind Power Project is a wind power generation project located in Jeju Special self-governing province, the Republic of Korea. The project utilizes wind power which is generating no greenhouse gases emission into the atmosphere. The project supports the government policies to promote new & renewable energy technology in Korea.
The annual wind speed in the project area is around 7.1m/sec. The capacity of each turbine is 3.0MW at max and the total capacity consisting of 11 turbines for the project is 33MW. The project produces about 61,899MWh per year and achieves an average annual emission reduction of 37,770tCO2 over the ten years.
Hanshin Energy, the owner of the generator, is responsible for the operation of the project and ECOEYE, a carbon project developer, supports monitoring of the CDM project to obtain emission reduction volume. ECOEYE is a company that discovers carbon credits not only in the Republic of Korea but also in various types of projects around the world.
The main goals of the project are:
reducing the greenhouse gas emission in Korea
using wind energy without greenhouse gas emissions contributes to the sustainable development of local communities
The project contributes to the sustainable development of Korea as follows:
Environmental benefits:
By using electricity generated by wind, it helps to reduce the use of fossil fuel. In addition, it is free from emitting CO2 and other gaseous pollutants such as NOx, SO2, and PM. It results the improved air quality.
Improved air quality reduces soil acidification, contributing to soil recovery in the area.
Renewable energy source provides future generation with environmentally friendly fuel alternatives that protect the environment.
Social benefits:
It is expected to increase tourism demand by making wind power complexes a landmark of tourist attractions and revitalize the local economy by creating jobs for the wind power plant operation and management.
Economic benefits:
By replacing fossil fuel use, it lowers the dependence on fossil fuel imports and directly generates electricity, resulting in economic benefits.
