Taebaek Wind Park (Hasami Samcheok) CDM Project is located in Gangwon-do, Republic of Korea. The project generates electricity based on wind energy. It contributes to the national renewable energy promotion policy and the global effort of GHG emission reduction.
The facility includes a power plant of 18MW generating capacity with 9 phases of 2MW. The project produces about 44,568 MWh per year and achieves an average annual emission reduction of 302,570 tCO2 over ten years.
Taebaek Wind Park Co., Ltd is the owner of the generator and is responsible for the operation of the project. ECOEYE, a carbon project developer, supports monitoring of the CDM project to obtain emission reduction volume. ECOEYE is a company that discovers carbon credits not only in the Republic of Korea but also in various types of projects around the world.
The main goals of the project are to: • reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Korea; and • utilize no greenhouse emission wind power to contribute to sustainable development in the local communities.
Contribution to Sustainable Development The contributions of this project towards sustainable development are explained with the following indicators:
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing: • The plant contributes to improvement of air quality by reducing domestic fossil fuel consumption for power generation. In addition, it is free from emitting CO2 and other gaseous pollutants such as NOx, SO2, and PM. • Improved air quality reduces soil acidification, contributing to soil recovery in the area. • Renewable energy source provides future generations with environmentally friendly fuel alternatives that protect the environment.
Contribution to Social and Technological Wellbeing: • The project increases tourism demand by making the wind power complex a tourist attraction which in turn revitalizes the local economy by creating jobs in plant operation and management. • The project diversifies sources for electric generation, helping improve power generation technology. • The project contributes to a decrease in the dependence of foreign oil for domestic energy supply.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing: • The project creates job opportunities directly and indirectly through construction and operation of the plant.
