The purpose of the project activity is to generate electricity by using the renewable hydraulic resources to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy in the region.
The Taraila project is run-of-the river small hydroelectric project, without involving storage of water, located on Taraila Nallah, a tributary of Baira Nallah in district Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, India. The project has an installed capacity of 5.0 MW. The electricity generated through project activity is sell it to the state grid, Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) through Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) contract.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development:
Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India has specified the social well being, economic well being, environmental well being and technological well being as the four indicators for sustainable development in the interim approval guidelines of host country approval eligibility criteria for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
The project activity is in rural area, it leads to the development of the region and improves the condition of roads connecting site and nearby villages.
Employment opportunities are generated both during the construction and operation phase.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
The project activity is using renewable hydraulic resources for power generation, so it is not causing emissions in the environment.
The project activity is a step toward environmental sustainability by saving exploitation and depletion of natural, finite and non-renewable resources like coal and gas.
Contribution to Economical Wellbeing:
The project activity generates employment in the local area and also creates a business opportunity for local stake holders such as suppliers, manufacturers and contractors etc.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing:
The project activity employs the well-established Francis Turbine that would encourage setting up of such new projects in future.
