The Project harnesses renewable resources in the region and thereby displacing non-renewable natural resources thereby ultimately leading to sustainable economic and environmental development. The objective is development, design, engineering, procurement, finance, construction, operation and maintenance of Tungabhadra 22.8 MW wind power project (“Project”) in the Indian state of Karnataka to provide reliable, renewable power to the Karnataka state electricity grid which is part of the Southern regional electricity grid. The Project will lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions because it displaces electricity from fossil fuel-based electricity generation plants.
By mitigating an annual 49,331 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions, this Project makes a substantial contribution towards realizing India's renewable energy objectives.
Benefits of Renewable Energy Projects:
The WWIL project goes beyond clean energy generation. It actively promotes sustainable development through:
Social Well-being:
Infrastructure Development: The project led to the development of supporting infrastructure such as road networks, improving access for the local population and enhancing their quality of life.
Poverty Alleviation: By establishing direct and indirect benefits through employment generation and improved economic activities, the project helped alleviate poverty in the region.
Energy Access: The project provided access to electricity through the local grid, improving living standards and creating opportunities for industries and economic activities in the area.
Environmental Well-being:
Renewable Energy Source: Utilizing wind energy instead of fossil fuels reduced greenhouse gas emissions and mitigated air and water pollution, promoting a healthier environment.
Resource Conservation: Wind energy, being renewable and sustainable, contributed to the conservation of natural resources.
Economic Well-being:
Employment Opportunities: The project created both temporary and permanent jobs, benefiting the local workforce and economy.
Improved Electricity Grid: Feeding electricity into the local grid enhanced its reliability and availability, attracting industries and stimulating economic development in the region.
