The proposed project activity involves the installation of a 3.6 MW wind power project in Kutch, Gujarat, India, promoted by Hyderabad Industries Limited (HIL). The project harnesses wind energy to generate clean electricity, displacing approximately 7,925 MWh annually and resulting in a reduction of 7,518 tCO₂e in greenhouse gas emissions per year.
Electricity generated by one Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) is supplied to the State Electricity Board, while the output from the other WTG is wheeled to HIL’s manufacturing facility in Golan, Tapi district, Gujarat.
Contribution to Sustainable Development
The project contributes to sustainable development across four key dimensions:
1. Social Wellbeing
The project creates employment opportunities for the local population during both construction and operational phases.
It supports infrastructure development in the surrounding region, including improved road connectivity and enhanced electricity supply, which benefits the local community.
By contributing to the NEWNE grid, the project helps reduce the regional power deficit and improves supply quality.
2. Economic Wellbeing
Generates direct and indirect employment during the erection, commissioning, and maintenance phases.
Contributes to addressing Gujarat’s electricity shortfall, supporting industrial growth and local economic activity.
At a national level, the project aids in conserving foreign exchange by reducing dependency on fossil fuel imports.
3. Environmental Wellbeing
The project displaces fossil fuel-based power generation in the NEWNE grid, mitigating associated greenhouse gas emissions.
As a zero-emission renewable energy project, it supports long-term environmental sustainability by conserving natural resources and reducing air pollution.
4. Technological Wellbeing
Despite India’s installed wind power capacity being only 7.37% of the total generation capacity as of March 2010, projects like this help demonstrate the viability of wind as a mainstream energy source.
The success of this initiative is expected to enhance awareness, attract further investment in the wind energy sector, and stimulate R&D for more efficient renewable technologies.
